Our research
Biotechnology has the power to change how we manufacture medicines, materials, and chemicals, as well as finding new ways to protect people and the environment.
Recognised by the UK Government as a key technology to support a sustainable UK economy, here at the MIB we are supporting that mission by engineering biology for a healthy, sustainable and prosperous future.
What is biotechnology?
Biotechnology is recognised as one of five research beacons at The University of Manchester. The research beacons are pillars of excellence in research, focused on driving discovery, creating social impact and tacking global challenges. Find out more about our biotechnology research by visiting the biotechnology research beacon page.
Our Institute is home to 40 cross-disciplinary research groups working in state-of-the-art research laboratories. The research is supported by a dedicated team of senior technical specialists who run our world-leading technology platforms including automated robotics platforms, NMR, fast-reaction/laser facilities, mass spectrometry, protein crystallography, high-throughput analytical suite, gene sequencing, computation and small-scale fermentation.
