Engineering biological solutions for environmental protection
The world’s growing population is placing ever increasing demands on our energy and food supply and is generating waste that is contributing to environmental problems.
Our researchers
Discover the research staff that specialise in food, energy and environment at MIB.
Biotechnology can provide novel solutions to these environmental challenges, from microbial carbon recycling and CO2 storage solutions, through to engineering biology for environmental decontamination. By harnessing the power of biology, our researchers are also finding new ways to turn waste feedstocks into valuable chemicals to reduce demand on petrochemical resources.
We currently have research projects active in the following areas:
- Capture and transformation of CO2
- Engineering biology for improved agriculture and low-emission food-production systems
- Valorisation of waste feedstocks
- Enzymatic deconstruction of plastics
- Bioremediation of environmental contaminants
